What Are the Different Types of Stair Chair Lifts

There are many different types of stair chair lifts available today. Some general awareness about these accessibility devices is useful if you are looking to install one. When it comes to choosing and installing one, it is best to rely on professional advice.

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

Residential and Commercial Stair Chair Lifts for Different Stairway Configurations

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

Stairway configurations vary and there are stairlifts available to suit any kind - straight, spiral or curved. If your building has a landing, you could install two sets of stairlifts.

Straight Stair lifts - These lifts are meant for buildings with straight stairways. They feature a straight rail track which can be conveniently fixed on your straight staircase. These models are comparatively easy to install.

Curved Stair Lifts - If your building stairway is curved or spiral, you would need to install a curved stair lift. Their curved rail track can be easily and conveniently configured to the staircase. Electra-Ride III from Bruno and ThyssenKrupp Access's Flow II and Stair-Glide are some of the well-known models of this type of lift.

Outdoor Stair Lifts - These lifts help you go up and down the stairs outside a home. In other words, they allow people with mobility issues go from the front door to the sidewalk or from a cabin to the boathouse. These weather-resistant devices come with many premium features such as swivel seat for easy and safe entry and exit at the top landing, and 12 volt battery that keep it working even during power outages. Bruno's Electra Ride Elite is a great outdoor stair chair lift model.

Electric and Battery-powered Stair Chair Lifts

Electric stair lift - The electric lifts, as the name suggests, work on direct electricity. Almost all models of these mobility products available are electric and suitable for all types of stairways. ThyssenKrupp Access's Citia, Stair-Glide and Excel, and Savaria's Step Saver Straight Stair Chair and B.07 Straight Stair Chair are popular models.

Battery-powered - Battery-powered lifts can be plugged into household electricity and continue working even during power outages. Most electricity-powered lifts come with battery back-up too.

Choose the Right Electric stair lift

Whatever the kind of stair lift you are looking to install, make sure that the brand you buy comes with all the necessary safety features. These would include safety braking system, obstruction sensors, seat belt, remote controls, folding tracks, folding arms, and so on. Installation is also important. It is not advisable to try and install the equipment on your own. A reliable dealer that offers different types of stair chair lifts can help you choose the right one and help you set it up without much structural modification. You can also benefit from the maintenance and repair service that your dealer offers.

Do You Know How To Measure A Chain Saw Blade And Chain?

Is your chainsaw starting to seem dull and not perform as well? Looks like it's time to replace the chain. In order to do this, you will need to know the length of both the chainsaw blade as well as the length and size of your chain. If you've checked out the manufacturers' charts, they might seem a little overwhelming. But it really is pretty simple once you understand what's involved in the length of the blade and chainsaw chain.

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

When you're ready to replace your chain, the first thing to do is determine the size of your chainsaw bar. If you happen to have an Oregon chainsaw, this should be easy. Just check the first two numbers of the ten-digit model number that is stamped on the motor end of the blade. That's your chainsaw bar length.

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

Don't have an Oregon chainsaw that easily shows you the length of the blade? Then here are some tips for figuring it out yourself.

What's The Best Way To Measure A Chain Saw Blade?

To measure the chainsaw blade itself is simple enough to do. Just put your measuring tape at the end of the bar up against the casing and measure straight down the bar all the way to the tip of the blade.

Blade and bar are two terms that are both used to indicate the same item. This is the blade that extends from the casing of the motor and carries the chain which is what does the sawing for you.

Manufacturers were kind enough to standardize the chainsaw blade lengths into two-inch increments. The most common sizes are 16, 18, and 20 inches although the full range goes from 10 to 42 inches! When you measure your blade, round up to the nearest 2-inch measurement if needed.

Measuring A Chainsaw Chain

To measure the chain on your chainsaw, there are two things you will need to know ... the number of drive links and the pitch of the chain.

A drive link is simply a tooth on the chain and your chain's length is determined by the number of drive links (or teeth). The pitch of the chain also affects the size of the drive links.

The pitch of the chain is important to know as it must match the pitch of both the drive sprocket as well as the bar nose sprocket. This should be stamped on the drive link but if you need to measure the pitch yourself, take the distance between any 3 rivets of the chain and divide by 2.

As an example, a 1/4" pitch chain might have 52 drive links and be 2.17 feet in length, while a 3/8" pitch with 52 drive links would be 3.18 feet in length. So the pitch affects the drive link size which affects your blade's length.

Still unsure? Just check with your chain saw's manufacturer or anyone who makes chains and they will be able to clear up any confusion you may have.

Jet Woodworking Tools for the Home Shop

Walter Meier Manufacturing has been producing tools under the Jet brand for several decades. Like many other quality brands, Jet has a loyal following among both amateur and professional woodworkers. The various models cover the broad range from inexpensive machines for the home shop all the way up to behemoths for industrial production tasks. Here we'll discuss various tools suitable for the home shop, with an eye to those just getting started in woodworking.

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

A bandsaw is one of the most flexible workhorses in the wood shop. It's called a bandsaw because the saw blade is a continuous metal band held between two large "pulleys." They're almost always driven by a motor at the bottom. In addition to straight cuts they can also saw curves with a radius limited by the blade's width. Jet bandsaws are especially well liked and available in both bench-top and floor-mount versions. Suitable models range from a few hundred dollars (10") to over a thousand dollars (16").

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

A drill press is often common in the home workshop. Unlike hand drills, presses rigidly mount the chuck on a vertically moving mount for exact angles and use adjustable stops for exact depths. Again, Jet offers both bench-top and floor-mount models suitable for the home shop. Typical prices range from below 0 (12") to just below ,000 (20").

Table saws are perhaps the most common power tool in the home wood shop. They make accurate straight cuts at various angles using a circular saw blade. They're also useful for other wood-cutting operations such as notches. All the Jet table saw models I've seen use 10" diameter blades. But the various models have widely varying prices, ranging from about 0 to almost ,000, depending on the features, motor horse power, and mounting.

As a special note, the Jet JBTS-10BT table saw is the one Jet Woodworking tool I would not recommend. Despite being somewhat expensive, it's guide "fence" is inaccurate and the cause of many problems.

If you expect to be doing cabinetry or furniture making you'll need a jointer/planer. These are used to make accurate flat surfaces and edges, such as reducing the thickness of a plank. Once again Jet offers a variety of floor-mount and bench-mount models. The various models range from under 0 (8") to around ,000 (15"). Planers are precision tools requiring lots of horsepower, and tend to be more expensive.

A lathe is used to "turn" cylinder-like objects such as table legs, candle holders, and even bowls. The stock to be turned is mounted horizontally between two "centers," one of which is motor driven. Various cutting tools are moved by hand across a tool rest to carve the various shapes. Like most lathes the various Jet models are bench-mount and range in cost from around 0 to almost ,000 depending on size, horsepower, and other features.

You may have noticed a pattern. Most quality woodworking power tools for the home shop cost from a bit below 0 to a bit above ,000, depending on size, power, and features. So you can easily spend a few thousand dollars to as much as ten thousand dollars setting up a full home woodworking shop. Fortunately you don't have to buy everything at once. You may want to make a list of projects you expect to be working on and get the tools necessary for them first. Yep, setting up your shop can be a life-long hobby in itself, and a great one at that.

Power Tool Buying Guide For Saw Blades

The first thing to remember when buying a saw blade is the arbor size. The arbor is the center hole in the blade and that must match the arbor size of the saw. On any saw remember to read your owners manually to see what blade size you will need for your saw. Saw blades come in a variety of sizes, types and materials.

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

Type of Materials used to make blades:

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

Steel Blades - Good for cutting softwoods, but will dull very quickly on hardwood. Inexpensive.

High-Speed Steel (HSS) Blades - Harder than the steel blades and will stay sharp longer. A little more pricey.

Carbide Tipped Blades - More expensive than the Steel and HSS, but they stay sharp longer than both. Good for hardwood cuts.

Abrasive Blades - Abrasive material used on these blades for cutting masonry and metals.

Diamond Blades - The tips of the blades have real diamonds and will cut through glass, concrete and ceramic tile.

The saw blade does the cutting. Spend a couple dollars more and invest in a blade that will stay sharp longer and give you a better cut.

Types of Blades

Gullet is the space between the teeth of the blade

Ripping - A ripping blade has few teeth and a large gullet for good wood removal. Used for cutting with the grain of the wood and will produce a ruff cut.

Crosscutting - Has many teeth, usually more than 48 and a very small gullet. This is used to cut across the wood grain and will produce a smooth finish.

Combination - Usually has a series of four to five teeth similar to the crosscut and is divided by a very large gullet Used for cutting with the grain, against the grain and miter cuts.

Plywood - Usually has a 100 or more teeth and as the name implies is used for cutting plywood.

Hollow Ground - This blade is ground thinner into the body than the teeth to prevent binding. Used for making smooth cuts across the wood grain.

Dado - This is manufactured as stacked, one piece or two piece adjustable units. Used for cutting grooves and dados in dimensional lumber and sheets.

Thin Kerf - Used for easy cutting and will not waste as much material. This is used for cutting dimensional lumber.

Abrasive - Used for cutting tile, masonry or even steel.

Diamond - Very sturdy and strong blade used for cutting tile, concrete, glass and ceramic materials.

For Easy Mulch Creation, Get a Wood Shredder

If you are a homeowner, cleaning up the yard can be a simple task if you have only a few trees and bushes. If you live in a wooded area or have a lot with heavy vegetation, maintenance can require constant attention.

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

Winter months can take a toll on yards with all the broken tree limbs and fallen leaves. Picking them up can be time consuming and hard on your body. If you don't have the money to hire someone you might want to invest in a wood shredder. Because even if you have the time and energy to clean it all up, what are you going to do with it?

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

Wood shredders create mulch which can be used in gardens or around the base of trees and shrubs for a decorative landscape. If consider purchasing a wood chipper you would need to consider what you are using it for. Small wood chippers cost around 0 and larger ones retail at about 00. When you compare these machines to commercial machines they are totally affordable. Industrial versions of wood shredders cost around ,000.

Rent or Buy

Wood shredders are a much more convenient option than rakes and bags but you have to ask yourself if you want to purchase one or just rent. Some jobs can be too much to handle in one day or even a weekend and after you rent one you might find that you'd like to have one at your disposal or that it's not worth having. So, maybe renting one is the best way to make an informed decision before you purchase.

You can find a local rental facility at rentallocator.com. Be aware though that sometimes, as with any rental equipment you might not even be using the highest quality machine. There are many horror stories about rental machines of this caliber. Sometimes they are too heavy, or they break down but that isn't always the case.

There are also terrible stories about people loosing arms, hands and fingers so please be aware of your own safety if you rent or buy a machine like this. Evaluate the machine for safety; check to see if the belts, shafts, and cutting mechanisms covered. Follow these safety guidelines:

1. Wear protective glasses or goggles, read the directions and never work alone.

2. Keep children, observers, and pets far away from the area where you are operating the shredder.

3. Only put approved materials into the machine at recommended feed rates.

Top brands for residential home wood chippers are said to be Troy Bilt, Echo Bearcat, Craftsman, MTD, and Patriot. Reviews on these manufacturers are available at Popularmechanics.com and Amazon.com.

How to Make a Pattern Copier For Your Woodworking Lathe

Lathe pattern copiers are expensive and are not available for many wood lathes. Pattern copiers are used to make duplicate turned spindles from an original. Here's how to make your own.

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

You will need a piece of 1/2 aluminum tubing as long as your lathe bed or a bit longer to make your lathe pattern copier. You will also need some 1/8" thick aluminum sheeting or you can buy some aluminum cookie sheets. Purchase a box of 10-40 bolts 1 1/2" long and a wing nut and washer for every bolt. Buy a second box of 10-40 bolts 1" long with nylon-lined lock nuts for every bolt. You will need (4) 3" angle irons with screws, as well. The rest of the parts for your lathe pattern copier can be made out of any scrap wood you may have laying around the shop.

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

The design of this lathe pattern copier incorporates multiple feeler "fingers" suspended behind the lathe along the aluminum pipe. These fingers are adjusted to match the exact depth of the cuts in your original turned spindle. When you place a new spindle blank on the lathe, all of the lathe pattern copier fingers you adjusted will be laying on top of the blank. As you cut into the blank, prepare yourself to stop cutting as soon as the fingers relating to that cut drop down and through the cut.

Make two, vertical support posts about 6" higher than the top of the largest spindle blank you can turn on that lathe. Note the outside diameter of the aluminum pipe and drill a hole of that size near the top of each support post. Mount the posts using the angle irons on the lathe table immediately behind the lathe. Insert the pipe through both holes to make sure it fits. This will help position the aluminum fingers of your lathe pattern copier so that they can reach the spindle you are turning.

Make a bunch of wood blocks 3/4" x 1¼" x 6" long. Drill a pipe sized hole in one end of each of them through the ¾" thickness. With the blocks lying flat, cut through from the end into the hole with a 1/8" table saw blade. With the blocks standing on edge, drill completely through each block between the hole and the end of the block. Use a drill diameter slightly larger that the shaft diameter of the 10-40 bolts. Insert one 1 ½" 10-40 bolt through the hole you just drilled and place a wing nut and washer on the end. The idea is that the wooden blocks will slip onto the pipe and the bolts and wing nuts will hold them in place by closing up the 1/8" cut you made on the table saw.

Drill another bolt hole of the same diameter about 1/2" from the other end of the block, centered with the block laying flat on the drill press table. Cut another 1/8" slot, 1" deep and centered through the 1¼" dimension, at right angle to the bolt hole. Remove one end of the pipe from the vertical support posts. You can now mount the blocks along the pipe before replacing the pipe in the vertical support post of your lathe pattern copier.

Cut aluminum fingers out of the flat stock using a 1/4" blade on the band saw. The fingers should measure 6" long and 3/4" wide. Both ends should be completely rounded (3/8" radius) on an edge, belt or disc sander. Drill a 10-40 bolt hole in one end of each finger centered 1/2" from the end. Sand the fingers smooth, removing saw marks and burrs.

Mount the aluminum fingers onto the ends of the wooden blocks, securing them in place with the 1" 10-40 bolts and lock nuts. The aluminum fingers must be free to move up and down.

Now place your original spindle on the lathe. Set the fingers to just drop through, barely touching the depth of each cut. Place the first blank on the lathe with the fingers you just adjusted resting on top of the spinning blank. Start cutting and stop as each finger falls through.

Bosch GCM12SD - Brilliant Design, Super Saw, Reasonable Price

Every once in a while a manufacturer will come up with a real engineering innovation. Bosch, a company with a strong reputation for ingenious design have done it again with the Bosch GCM12SD 12 Inch Axial Glide Dual Bevel Miter Saw. They have completely redesigned the sliding miter saw in the Axial Glide Saw. In fact it doesn't slide at all. It's robust, robotic looking arm carries the blade smoothly and with great accuracy. Sensibly priced by Bosch, there are also some good deals around. Read on to find out more.

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

All sliding miter saws have a major weakness-the rails on which the motor and blade assembly is mounted. The rails are vulnerable to damage, wear and exposure to sawdust and resins. Recalibration is a chore and accuracy and consistency can be a problem. Aside from these flaws rails also take up a lot of space at the back of the saw. So to accommodate a sliding miter saw you need extra space available at the back of the saw. In the workshop, material supports also have to be installed away from the wall too. This wastes a massive amount of valuable space.

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

Why is the Bosch Axial Glide So Much Better Than Sliding Miter Saws?

1.Space Saving

Bosch have removed the slide rails completely and replaced them with a hinged arm. This extends to move forward and folds to move backwards. At no point does it protrude from the back of the machine, allowing the saw to be placed within an inch of a back wall. As you can imagine this allows the Bosch Axial Glide Miter Saw to be set up in places where previously it was impossible to fit a sliding miter saw. For example an alcove, cupboard or narrow hallway. In the workshop space savings can be truly liberating.

2.Durable

The Bosch looks very different from what you'd expect of a miter saw. The axial-glide system is actually two arms, set opposed 90 degrees to one other. They are coupled together and work in unison as a single unit. The hinged joints supported by 12 ball bearings and the entire arm is designed for heavy duty operation, and cast from aluminum. Such a design is not entirely new and similar setups have been used in suspension systems where durability is needed. The precision, sealed ball bearings won't stick or get gummed up like a rail and will suffer far less wear and tear.

3.Accurate

The opposing arms and precision bearings means there virtually no play in the axial glide arm as the saw makes a cut. Even when making compound cuts the blade always stays central in the kerf and movement is consistent and accurate every time.

4.Smooth

No other saw feels like this one. In use it moves with liquid smoothness without hardly any effort from the user. Conventional sliding saws seem gritty and uneven after this. This big 15 amp motor helps here too and nothing I cut ever slowed it down. Some users prefer a bit more "feel". To this end bosch have included a damper to increase resistance.

5. Extended Capacity

It's a pleasant surprize that the Bosch GCM12SD actually has a greater cutting capacity than the previous 12-inch model from Bosch. It increases horizontal cutting capacity by 2 inches, now a huge 14 inches. Vertical capacities are slightly increased too.

6.Full Featured

Here's a quick list of the main features of this saw, many of which are found on other Bosch saws but a few are new.

Best in class dust extraction:Split square-lock quick release fences:Upfront controls including bevel adjustment: 10 Adjustable Detent stops:Detent override:Clear etched scales:Biggest in class, bulit in material extension supports:Comfortable ambidextrous handle and trigger.

How to Get The Best Price for the Bosch GCM12SD

One way to get the best deal is to check out all the online retailers for the best price. Don't forget to check customer reviews for customer service and to know who's going to ship out in a reasonable period of time and who's going to take care of you if you have a problem with shipping damage.

You could spend a lot of time doing this or you could let someone else do the work for you.

Horizontal Band Saw

A horizontal band saw is usually used for cutting large pieces of wood or metal.  It works differently than the standard vertical band saw: instead of moving your workpiece into the blade, the reverse is true: You typically clamp the work piece in place and then the blade descends through the workpiece as it is cut.  Usually the blade is simply anchored on one side and is driven downwards through your piece by gravity!  In the case of a metal horizontal band saw, it will usually have a sprayer and pump to make sure that the workpiece is covered in a cutting fluid which is recirculated throughout the saw

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

Without this cutting fluid, the piece can overhead and cutting it will be much less efficient.  Like all bandsaws, this saw uses a continuous circle of metal with a blade or grinding agent on one of the edges.  This circular blade is spun quickly by an electrical motor in order to efficiently cut through wood or metal.  This is a foundational tool in many workshops. Keep in mind that they are generally used for cutting stock generally down to size and that precise finishing cuts are made on more precise equipment.

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

When buying your own saw, you can find one new or look around to find one used.  When buying one pre-owned, it's a good idea to buy one in good running condition so that you don't need to put more money into maintenance.  When buying it, be sure to watch it run and understand any quirks it may have from the current owner.  If they have any extra blades, try to get these thrown in for free as they are expensive to buy and this can make the used deal even better for you.

Craftsman NEXTEC Cordless Tools: Real Power Tools or Just Toys?

In this article I am going to give you my quick review of all the NEXTEC tools available now. Craftsman just announced that they are greatly expanding the Craftsman NEXTEC 12 volt Cordless power tools in May 2011 so this is a good time to go over the entire line. The Craftsman NEXTEC QuickBoost Charger will hit shelves in May 2011 and will be followed shortly by a NEXTEC 12-volt 3-in-1 garden tool, string trimmer, hedge trimmer, vacuum, digital inflater, work light and second generation "Hammerhead" Auto Hammer.

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

I like tools. I like "Tim the Toolman Taylor" Tools. Bigger is better! More Power! Oo-OoO! So when Craftsman sent me the NEXTEC Cordless 12 volt Power Tools last spring I used them, wrote a couple of articles on these cute little tools and then promptly put them down in my basement workshop. They were nice, lightweight tools. They had plenty of power, but I still went back to my "big" tools. I basically forgot about them.

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

Then, I went into my local Sears around Thanksgiving and I saw customers literally buying the NEXTEC Lithium-Ion Drill/Driver as fast as the store personnel could put them out. What was really strange to me is these NEXTEC 12 volt drills were flying off the shelves, but no one was buying the DeWalt DCD710 12V MAX lithium drill from the display right along side the NEXTEC's. I knew is was a nice little drill, but I didn't think everyone else liked it that much. The same thing was happening with the Craftsman NEXTEC 12.0 Volt Right Angle Impact Driver was selling well but no one was buying the Dewalt DCF815 12V MAX 1/4 impact driver right next to it.

During the winter I move into a room in the basement. It's small, only 10 X 10 ft so I don't have room for a lot of stuff. My router, a workbench with a wood vise, a few hand tools and a set-up table. There is no room for my table saw, miter saw, jointer and drill press. I end up cutting my wood out in the unheated garage, bringing it downstairs, fitting it up, going back out in the garage to drill the holes or joint an edge, back down stairs......you get the picture.

Well, while I was getting the room ready for the winter I found the NEXTEC tools and decided to take a good hard look at them again.

I decided that I would use these tools exclusively in my downstairs workshop this winter.

What I like:

Weight. The NEXTEC tools weigh only half of even my lightest cordless drill.

Size. Easy to handle even for small hands. Don't feel too small like the little cordless screwdrivers for big hands

Power. Have as much power as the old 15.6 tools and I think a lot more power than the old 7.2, 9.6, 10.8 and 14.4 tools. More power than the C3 19.2 volt Model 17191

In the rest of this article I will give quick review of each tool:

Craftsman NEXTEC 12.0V Lithium-Ion Drill/Driver Model 17586 What I like: It costs less than half of DeWalt DCD710 12V MAX Drill. It weighs less at only 2.2 lbs. with the 12.0 Volt Lithium-Ion battery. It will fit in your hand and easily slip into the pocket of your work apron. This is the most powerful drill on the market for the weight. It has 195 in.-lbs. of Torque which is plenty for most of the tasks around your home. It has a 2-Speed Gearbox and a 3/8-Inch Single Sleeve Keyless Chuck. A lot of guys thin they need a 1/2 inch chuck, but if you look at the wall at your nearest hardware store 95% of the drill bits and screwdriving bits will fit in this drill. 18 Position Adjustable Torque Clutch. Integrated LED Work Light. 30-Minute Quick Charger What I don't like: I really like this drill and about the only thing I would put on it would be a battery charge indicator. It would be nice to know when the battery is about to run out.

Craftsman NEXTEC 12.0 Volt Right Angle Impact Driver Model 17562 What I like: Even though Sears states this has only 700 in lbs of torque a bunch of us feel it has as much power as the Dewalt DCF815 12V MAX 1/4 impact driver for a lot less money. We also liked the right angle drive. It will get into places the other drills can't. What I don't like: The right angle takes a little practice to get used to. When you first use it...use both hands until you get the feel for the impact driver. After that you will enjoy using it.

Craftsman 17428 Nextec 12-volt Cordless Compact 1/4'' Impact Driver Model 17428 What I like: Same weight and feel as the Model 17586 Drill/Driver. What I don't like: Could use a battery meter.

12-volt NEXTEC Multi-Tool Model 17438 What I like: Multi-tools are quickly becoming the go-to tool for cutting, sanding, grout removal and scraping. This lightweight tool can easily do the work of a trim saw, jamb saw, drywall saw, detail sander, rotary grout tool, carbide cutter and paint scraper. The Craftsman NEXTEC is one of the lightest of the bunch and it will accept the Fein attachments. This gives it the most versatility of all the mulit-tools out there. It has plenty of power to do all these tasks around the home. The batteries last about 20 minutes during continuous use, charge in 30 minutes and you can get a second battery if you need one for less than . What I don't like: Eventually I would like to see quick release blade changing. It only takes 30 seconds to change the tool now, but I want to do it faster!

NEXTEC 12-volt Lithium-Ion Hammerhead Auto Hammer Model 11818 What I like: I don't use nails very often anymore. I use screws for most of my woodworking tasks, but the other day I put a few more lights in the basement and the Hammerhead was the right tools to nail the outlet boxes into the rafters. It only took 30 seconds to nail the box into the beam and NO BENT NAILS! What I don't like: Craftsman is coming out with a new version of this about May 2011. I will wait to give you my viewpoint then.

Craftsman NEXTEC 12.0V Lithium-Ion True Finish™ Sander Model 61326 What I like: This is a "Mouse" size sander but it has two big advantages over all the other sanders like it on the market. One, it is cordless! The battery lasts a long, long time. Two, It doesn't make your hand go numb! The built in counter balancer cancels out the hand numbing vibration you are used to. What I don't like: NO ONE knows about this sander! It comes in one kit and you can get the "bare" tool online but very few people realize how nice this sander is.

Craftsman NEXTEC 12.0V Lithium-Ion Circular Saw Model 61325 What I like: This is the one tool in the NEXTEC line that I really don't like. It has enough power to cut even hard maple, but the design is all wrong. The base plate "shoe" is too big for the saw, The saw mark on the shoe is too far away from the blade. It doesn't have a laser guide, the light is in the wrong place, the blades are too thick and there is not enough of a selection of blade styles. What I don't like: Oops, I already told you what I don't like.

Craftsman 14299 Nextec 12-volt Cordless Multi-Saw Model 14299 What I like: I use this saw a lot for the size, power, and versatility. It has a lot of power for the size and is really handy for those quick cuts. It uses standard jig saw blades which come in all sizes and styles. What I don't like: It doesn't have a "blower" to keep the sawdust away from your cut line.

Craftsman NEXTEC 12 volt LED Worklight Model 14298 What I like: This is a great work light and flashlight for the house. It will run continuously for hours on one battery and the battery stays charged for over a year if you don't use it. The head swivels for under the sink work and it stands up all by itself. What I don't like: My wife saw it, and immediately stole it to put on her nightstand! Now if it only came in decorator colors!

Craftsman 12 Volt Nextec Compact Lithium-Ion battery Model 11221 What I like: You can buy additional batteries for less than . A lot of power for the size. (as much as your old 14.4 batteries) Will hold a charge for up to a year. With the new charger Craftsman just announced will recharge to 25% in less than 3 minutes. What I don't like: I would like a little clip so I can hang a spare on my belt.

Summary: The Craftsman NEXTEC 12 volt Cordless power tools are great for homeowners. They are lightweight, strong and easy on the wallet to buy. They work surprisingly well for the size and cost a lot less than other brands. I highly recommend these tools.

Three Kinds of Circular Saws For Three Different Jobs

While there are many types and sizes of circular saws on the market, I would like to discuss what I believe to be the three most important categories. They are: plunge saws with guide rails, worm drive or hypoid saws for construction use and standard-drive circular saws suitable for both home and construction use. Before I delve into all of that, however, I'd like to take a quick look at the basics.

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

A circular saw allows you to take a relatively small tool to a large work piece and cut it without too much back-breaking labor. In the past, the price for this convenience was inaccuracy because there was no really easy way to force a circular saw to cut straight along a pencil line. For rough construction work like roofing and decking, this was no problem. For fine woodworking, however, the circular saw was not the tool of choice. Most woodworkers rely on the table saw to get the long, straight cuts they need and for good reason. The fence on a table saw gives the constant reference point needed for straight cuts.

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

Sometimes, however, using a table saw to trim the top of a huge conference table, for instance, turns out to be an impossible task, especially when trying to trim off the ends at 90 degrees to the sides. That's when a very carefully planned approach using a circular saw seems to deliver the best final result. I would draw a pencil line using a long straightedge exactly where I wanted the trim cut to go. I would then carefully measure the distance between the inside (or outside) of the saw blade and the edge of the foot plate of the saw. The next step would be a second pencil line, parallel to the first one and separated from it by the distance I measured between the inside (or outside) of the saw blade and the edge of the foot plate. I would locate an absolutely straight board (ripped straight on the table saw, if necessary) and clamp this across the table top as a guide along the second pencil line. Then, I could make a pretty straight cut along the first pencil line. I would then repeat this for the other end of the table top.

In the past few years, this process has become a whole lot easier. There are now several makes and models of plunge saws that run along metal guide rails, cutting right next to the edge of the rail without cutting into the rail itself. The guide rails don't even need to be clamped to the surface being cut because they have material underneath that keeps them from sliding around. If you feel more comfortable clamping down the guide rail, this can be done, as well. It's a simple matter to lay the guide with its edge along the cut line and then to take the saw and run it down the rail, cutting right next to the lip of the rail.

Because these saws are plunge-type saws, you can begin and/or end a cut in the middle of a sheet of plywood. You could cut out a window or door opening, for instance and have it come out clean and square every time. The best thing about using these track saws is the confidence they give you: You KNOW you can do a perfect job, quickly, accurately, over and over again.

Another kind of circular saw I've used a lot over the years, mostly for construction, is the worm drive saw pioneered by Skil. A framing carpenter needs to be able to cut a lot of lumber all day long. While accuracy is always desirable, it is not as critical to the framer as it would be to a finish carpenter or cabinet maker. Speed is the thing that the framer wants on his side and he (or she) does not want to be saddled with a saw that can't cut the mustard, so to speak. He doesn't want his circular saw to bog down in the middle of cutting a 2 x10 joist or have the sole plate hang up every time it goes across the edge of another board. He does not want to have the saw blade slipping around the saw arbor. What he wants is clean, fast accurate cuts: In short, power.

A worm drive saw delivers the constant power he needs because there is no slack or play anywhere between the powerful motor and the saw teeth that are doing the cutting. The worm gear cuts down a bit on saw blade RPM but trades this off for torque. It is torque, more than speed, that powers a saw blade through thick, wet wood. A diamond-shaped arbor makes it virtually impossible for the blade with a matching diamond-shaped hole to rotate around the arbor. Keeping the number of saw teeth down to 18-24 teeth on a 7 1/4" saw blade also helps. The only problem with early Skil worm drive saws was the weight with those large motors and all that gearing. The solution was to use magnesium instead steel in the construction of the saw wherever possible. The modern magnesium worm drive saws weigh only about 14 to 15 pounds which is more than a standard circular saw but manageable in the strong hands of a muscular framer.

The final category included the kind of saw that most people think of as a circular saw. It is lighter than the worm drive saws and, for most uses, it's plenty powerful enough. Some of these saws are now also be made out of magnesium parts and weigh just over 10 Lbs. This makes them easy to use by the average do-it-yourselfer. Did I mention that they are a lot less expensive than the other types?
