What is a Metal Saw?

There are several metal saws on the market today. We will discuss the four most popular types of metal saws. I will answer the question what is a metal saw and how they are used. What is a metal saw? It is a saw designed to cut different types of metal. It is capable of sawing through solid metal pipes, aluminum rails, and even copper. All metal saws have one main purpose, and that is to cut certain types of metal for building, and mostly are used in construction settings.

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

Most contractors will explain to you what is a metal saw, and what they will use them for. The saws are used in residential and commercial building use. They are used to cut different metals for different installations. There is a specific metal saw that cut only certain metals. So if you have a particular metal that needs to be cut, you can rent this tool for home use.

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

The first saw we need to discuss is the hack saw, and what is a metal saw. This is a metal saw that cuts electrical piping when electrical cord is pulled through. It is also designed to cut thin gauge metal plumbing pipe. One last use is to cut threaded metal rods. This type of rod is used for suspending plumbing piping from concrete ceilings.

What is the metal chop saw? It has a round blade, and cuts solid pipes such as rebar. Rebar is placed in concrete to strengthen the concrete material. There are three blade saws that are used with the chop saw. The blade sizes are a ten inch blade, a twelve inch blade and the last is the fourteen inch size blade. If you choose to use the larger blades, you will be able to cut larger sized pipes.

The band saw, what is a metal band saw? The band saw will cut metal I beams. The I beam is shaped in a capital I and it supports metal framed buildings. Another use of this saw is that it cuts large diameter metal piping which is used for water treatment plants. The pipes are also used for electrical power plates. An electrical power plate is the way the band saw cuts the pipe, it is a level straight cut making welding pipes together easier.

The last saw we will learn about today is the aluminum chop saw. The name of the saw explains exactly what this saw is used for, and that is only to cut aluminum. This saw is used for two main things, to cut aluminum railing to build screen rooms, as well as cutting gutters for the outside eaves of your home. This saw is used primarily used by professionals in construction building work.

So what is a metal saw? At this point you have been shown what a metal saw is and four different metal saws and what they can and can not saw through. It is all about using the right saw for the right metal type. All metal saws will cut through metal as if it were butter. As you are doing your research before you need a metal saw, learn everything you can about the specific saw that you need. Lastly consult a professional, and even hire a professional to do this job for you.

Different Types of Power Tools

Power tools are tools used for drilling, cutting, shaping and many other industrial actions that can be powered by a steam engine, an electric motor or even natural power sources. Power tools can be stationary or portable. Stationary tools are the large machines that cannot be easily moved, while the portable ones can easily be moved and can be held by hand.

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

The tools can further be divided into those with a power cord and those without. Cordless are the ones that are powered by batteries. They are more easy to handle because they are light and do not need an external power source. The batteries used are rechargeable. Cordless tools may include pruning shears, hand held vacuums, trim saw, planer and the jig saw. The first cordless tool was the electric screw driver that used an alkaline flash battery.

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

There are different types of power tools. One of these is the drillers, which are used in cutting holes very fast. It uses motor to turn. They are sometimes used as sanders. If you can use adapters on the drills, you can use them to drive screws and bolts too.

Sanders are not used to smoothen a rough surface. Some of them include mouse sanders, belt sanders and drum sanders. They come in different shapes and sizes and make the work of smoothening easier. Joiners are also a type of power tools that joins two pieces of wood cut into thin slots.

A tool that uses a combustion engine or an electric motor to operate is the chain saw. They are easily portable and are mainly used to cut trees. Saws are on of the most dangerous to use because of the sharp blades. They should therefore be used with care.

Reciprocating Saws - The Jig Saws Mean Big Brother

The reciprocating saw is an adaptation of the saber saw, or jig saw, for heavy duty work such as construction. In this article I'll cover the types available as well as blade types and their uses.

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

Reciprocating saws range widely in power, speed, and features, from less powerful portable, to high-power, high-speed, corded models. Modern reciprocating saws almost all have variable speed, using a trigger or preset using a dial. Another feature that has become important to the way these saws are used is the inclusion of an orbital action. The action consists of oscillating the traversed reciprocation in up and down fashion causing the tip of the blade to move in an oval pattern, up and down as well as back and forth. This feature is primarily for wood, allowing quick cuts.

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

The blades for these saws are range in length from 2 ½ to 12 inches, and are generally heavier than saber and jig saw blades. They range in purpose from cutting metal and wood as well as manner of materials in between.

Blade Types

Course Tooth - Typically used for cutting green wood.

Hack Saw - Used to cut metal, typically up to 1/8 inch in thickness.

Knife - This blade has the greatest range of uses. It cuts leather, rubber, cloth, linoleum, and many more similar materials.

Fine-tooth - When a smooth cut is need for wood, plastic, or hardboard this is the one for the job.

In many models, blades may be mounted to cut up, down, or horizontally, and flush with an adjoining surface. In structural work and remodeling, long blades are sometimes used to cut right through a wall, after of course making sure wire or plumbing won't be damaged. Blades for such use can cut right through any nails they encounter. Blades manufactured specifically for cutting heavier metal, such as pipe or bar stock, need to be lubricated regularly with light oil.

These saws today almost always come with variable speed control. Speeds range from around 2300 strokes per minute down to a few hundred (for cutting steel and some plastics).

Picking the right saw for your own use really depends on the type of job(s) you intend to accomplish. A larger, more robust model is probably overkill for most around the home projects and not to mention the price for these puts them out of reach of most budgets. The smaller, lightweight, more affordable versions on the market today offer the typical handyman more then enough versatility to handle any "honey-do" list.

There you have it. Reciprocating saws are not for everyday use in most cases, but having one in your tool box is a smart decision for the avid do-it-yourselfer. Just remember to choose the right for your needs, and above use it and any power tool in a safe and controlled manner.

Table Saw Tips

Whether you are using it for pleasure (e.g. making bird houses, making a work bench) or for work (e.g. cutting wood flooring boards, building a ramp), table saws are one of the most useful tools that you can have. However, like all tools, table saws can be dangerous and must be used properly. Here are a few tips for using your table saw.

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

1. Never start your table saw with the wood piece you are planning to cut positioned up against the saw blade. Instead, start you saw and let the saw blade reach its full speed before you move the wood piece against the saw blade for cutting. Use light pressure to move the wood piece against the blade. Never force the wood.

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

2. Never reach around or over the saw blade! Fingers, hands, and forearms are no match for a spinning or non-spinning saw blade.

3. Invariably, wood slivers or cut off pieces of wood will become jammed or wedged between the saw blade, the anti-kickback pawls, and the table top. Before you attempt to remove any of these jammed pieces of wood, turn off the power to the table saw and wait until the blade has completely stopped spinning.

4. Always wear safety glasses when operating your table saw.

5. When cutting long or wide pieces of wood, use an adjustable saw horse or supportive device to rest the wood on that is not resting on the saw's table top. Otherwise, the unsupported weight of the board may cause the wooden board to shift or buckle on the table and create safety and cutting problems.

6. Many table saws' "OFF/ON" switches now come with lockable latch holes. If you have kids, always keep your table saw locked when you are not using it. A padlock or cable lock can be used to lock up the "OFF/ON" switch. If you cannot lock your "OFF/ON" switch, always keep your saw unplugged when it is not in use.

7. To keep the wood piece from moving when you are using a miter gauge, cut to shape and glue a piece of sandpaper to the face of the miter gauge. The sandpaper will help keep the piece of wood from moving while it is being cut. Also, make sure that you have your miter gauge locked in place before you begin cutting.

8. Do not try to cut more than one piece of wood at a time!

9. You can use a combination square to double check your saw blade's 45 degree and 90 degree bevel adjustments. You can also use a combination square to make sure that both ends of your saw blade are properly aligned/positioned.

10. When using the table saw do not stand directly in front of the saw blade - instead, stand to either side of it. This will help keep you from getting hurt if the back of the spinning saw blade catches a piece of cut wood and throws it forward during cutting.

11. Turn your table saw off and remove the table saw's electrical cord from its power source before you change blades, install or remove accessories, make repairs, or perform any sort of cleaning or maintenance on your saw.

12. Never operate your saw without the throat plate (or table insert) being in place. Also, before you start using your saw, make sure that you have adjusted your plate/insert so it is flush with the table top surface. You can do this by tightening or loosening the plate's/insert's adjustment screws. Resting a ruler cross-wise over the throat plate/table insert after it has been inserted into its position on the table top will allow you to see which screws you need to tighten or loosen to make the plate/insert level with the table top.

I hope these tips and safety reminders will be of help to you!

3 Features For the Best Portable Table Saws

If you wonder which table saw would be the best choice for your woodcutting needs you will definitely have to check for some parameters and highlight them according to the projects in hand. Before buying a table saw and table saw tools always check out the accuracy, motor system and portability and thus you will know which one would be fit for your task. If you are going to carry the saw with you and use in multiple workplaces it should be portable and light enough to be carried with. On the other hand if you are going to keep the saw at your shop, whether it's a 10 inch table saw or 12", portability won't be of that importance. Also consider the fence and the table setup, the blade and motor mounting system and the table saw tools coming with the saw itself.

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

Table and fence setup:

Dewalt 12 Saw Blade

It's imperative to setup the fence and the table properly in order to get a clear cut effectively. When you need a wider cut but at the same an accurate one fence and rails should be used that will extend beyond the table. DeWalt model DW744 has a fence and rail with expandable table which supports up to 24 ½" rip cut. The cogwheel and tooth track system allows the table to expand and the fence to be set and locked at the end of the rail. There are many popular brands out there among them Bosch table saw and Roybi table saws should be mentioned. Bosch and Ridgid are portable that comes with expandable table adjustable to increase or decrease the width of the cut. While Bosch table saws use aluminum rails sturdy enough to withstand pressure of plywood, Ridgids are even stronger and they are more frequently used in Home Depot. BT3000SX is one of the most powerful Roybi table saws that are capable of producing cuts 33 inches wide. All the portable table saws share some common features such as expendable fence, quick change inserts, sliding miter table and considerably light weight.

The other two popular portables are the Hitachi saws and Jet products. Jet table saws are quite heavy especially due to the heavy rot iron extensions. But they are good at ripping plywood in halves. On the other hand Hitachi portable table saws, like Hitachi C10RA2 has aluminum made table body and steeled jacket making it too heavy to move even without the stands.

There are lighter table says as well that comes at cheaper than the heavy Hitachi C10RA2 or the similar. Delta, Skil and Powermatic produces those light weight saws. Powermatic has comparatively larger brushed aluminum table body with 2 extensions and therefore they are heavier and less mobile than Delta or Skil saws. Delta and Skill saws however come with cam-locking fences and aluminum tables.

Motors and Mounting:

An important feature for portable table saws is the way the motor and the blades are mounted.
One will have to mount the blades and the motor on the bigger portable table saws with guide rods and use symmetrical tracks to lower or raise the blade. Following these clear and quality cuts are ensured by reducing the vibration of the motor and blade. Again, the vibration may come back as soon as one adjusts angles. Ridgid and Makiti portable saws use tooth and cog to adjust the motor and they use the adjusters at their higher adjuster wheel thus improving the motor carriage. Meanwhile Hitachi and Ryobi portable saws use pull/ push hand wheel to adjust. Among them Hitachi have plastic track and gears and for the reason their durability isn't beyond questioning.
The best blade and motor mount system will be found with Jet portable table saws. It uses two screws, one for adjusting the angle and the other for height, but due to that extra hand wheel Jet table saws are a bit heavier.

Accessories:

The main concerns of the accessories are to make the more use of your saws more convenient and safe while adding to their portability. Makita's come with an accessory stand that is used to increase the width of the cut. Although the stand makes the saw bulky, with the help of the stand a 49 inches wide cut can be produced. Roybi table saws include portable steel made cart with extension tables in their accessories. Extension tables are more like shopping carts used to shop around.

Among the most common accessories are the stands with bolts and the legs. Many brands like Powermatic, Ridgid, DeWalt and Bosch have those accessories which affect their portability negatively. However, DeWalt, Bosch and RidGid table saws have the most easily adjustable stands and they are easy to setup and move. Stands used in Bosch Table saws can pop open and fold flat with just one move. Ridgod portable table saws have extra portability due to the hand truck. The stand folds and fits to the truck as well as the saw itself and thus can be carried away with ease.

In general:

Considering the accessories and the mobility the best brand names are be RidGid, Dewalt and Bosch. The main features that contributed to their performance are effective blade and motor mounting system, with provision to produce wider cuts, useful accessories and portability. Thus they are also good for working at different work places. As long as the price is concerned Makita and Hitachi can be considered as they come much cheaper than the above brands but still able to give quality cuts. The table saw tools you re going to need will largely depend on the type of your projects. If you require fence table saws for professional purposes and some 10 inches work every now and then you will more likely be investing in Bosch or something of its kind. For occasional wood workers who don't need to travel much and don't need top notch precision the least expensive fence table saws would be the perfect choice. Depending on the wood workers needs each has its plus and minus points.

Featuring two thin kerf, carbide blades, one with 80 teeth and one with 32 teeth, this set gives you a pair of great options. Both blades feature a wedge shoulder design that puts an increased amount of steel behind each blade tip to prevent breakage and ensure precision, along with a computer-balanced plate that acts to reduce vibration for a better feel and finish. These blades are built for use with miter saws and slide miter saws.
